§01What a pool deck project is
A pool deck is a poured concrete surface around a pool shell — a working surface for standing, sitting, walking, holding furniture and holding water that runs off swimmers. It carries three loads that a driveway does not: constant wet exposure, sun exposure that makes the surface temperature a comfort issue, and chemical exposure to pool water — chlorine on a standard pool, sodium chloride on a salt-water pool.
A pool deck project is coordinated with the pool builder, not run alongside them. The pool shell is set before the deck is poured; the coping detail decides the deck edge; the pool fill is scheduled against the deck cure.
§02Coping detail
The coping is the finished edge around the top of the pool shell — the piece a swimmer's hand touches when they climb out. The deck is poured against it. Coping detail decides whether the deck reads as one piece with the pool or as a separate slab.

Whichever detail is used, the deck is expansion-joint isolated from the pool shell. A hard connection between deck and shell cracks in the first thermal cycle.
§03Slope and drainage
Water on a pool deck comes from three sources — pool splash, rain, and swimmer runoff. It has to move off the deck fast enough that the deck does not stay wet under bare feet.
- Positive slope of 1/4 inch per foot away from the pool, running out to a perimeter drain or a graded landscape.
- Trench drain at the outer perimeter where the deck sits below a lawn, patio or planted bed.
- Deck drains cast in as needed for large decks — grated inlets on the reinforcement, expansion-joint isolated from the surrounding slab.
- No ponded water on the deck on a wet-check day.

§05Finish and surface temperature
Pool decks take one of three finishes. Each has a trade-off between traction, surface temperature under sun, and how comfortable it is to sit on.

Lighter base colors on a stamped or exposed-aggregate deck read cooler underfoot than darker colors under summer sun. A dark stamped color that reads well as a design choice can be uncomfortable barefoot in July.
§06Cure, sealer and pool fill schedule
Cure runs seven days. Foot traffic 24 hours; furniture at 7 days; sealer at 14 to 28 days depending on finish.
- Sealer — penetrating (silane, siloxane) for a plain broom finish; acrylic solvent- or water-based for stamped and decorative surfaces per product spec. Two thin coats, out of direct sun.
- Salt-water exposure — sealer product chosen against sodium-chloride exposure per manufacturer.
- Re-seal — every 2 to 4 years, sooner on a heavily used deck.
- Pool fill — the pool builder's schedule for filling the pool runs against the deck cure. Deck-side traffic at pool fill no earlier than 7 days after pour; heavy deck load (fill equipment on the deck) at 28 days.
§07Coordination with the pool builder
A pool deck project is coordinated with the pool builder from the site visit. The stages that need coordination:
- The pool shell is set and the coping is in place before deck subgrade is worked.
- The deck subgrade elevation is set against the coping height.
- Any pool equipment penetrating the deck — skimmers, returns, deck jets, autofill — has to be marked and cast in with the deck. Retrofitting a deck jet through a cured deck is a saw-cut, patch and seal-line job that never quite matches.
- Any coping-to-deck detail — bond-breaker, expansion joint, joint filler color — is agreed against the pool builder's coping spec.
- The pool fill and start-up chemistry schedule is agreed against the deck cure and sealer schedule.
